We departed Carlsbad Caverns on October 13th and headed 287 miles northeast to Amarillo, Texas to visit our friends, Paul and Susan Roberson, who also full-time in their RV.

We did not realize we were headed straight into a cold front accompanied by blowing rain the further north we got into Texas. In the mere six hours of travel, the temperatures dropped from 83 degrees to 29 degrees with wind gusts of 40 miles per hour. We stopped off at a Sams Club in Lubbock, Texas to pick up some winter gear.

By the time we made it to the Oasis RV Resort in Amarillo, it was full on raining. Paul and Susan braved the cold rain to help us find our space and get hooked up. We broke the first rule when setting up camp after traveling…double and triple check to make sure all of the doors and cabinets stayed closed during our trip before opening the slide outs. We hastily set up and opened one of the living room slide outs. The crunching sound that followed was the slide out ripping off one of the cabinet doors above the television…lesson learned.

Susan made it all better as she had prepared a wonderful hot meal for us when we arrived (Susan is a GREAT cook!!!).

We spent the next few days playing games, fixing a cabinet door, and doing laundry. Paul and Susan arranged for a limo ride to the infamous Big Texan Steak Ranch where they are known for their 72-ounce steak eating contest. We did not participate in the contest but Tracy did have a delicious 26-ounce Ribeye.

On October 17th, we caravanned with the Robersons to Wellington, Texas for the First Annual NomadFEST. NomadFEST was an event put together to showcase the world premier of the RV Nomads movie. The event brought together over 500 RVers for a week of film, music, social networking, seminars and workshops, an RV show, and a vendor fair. The week culminated with a private showing of the movie and the opportunity to meet the families featured in the film.

On October 22nd, we packed up, said our goodbyes to the Robersons, and headed south to San Antonio where we would spend the winter.
